THE STROUSE FAMILY THE FIRST GENERATION

Some of the following was compiled by myself, with input from the following: Tom Myers, Jake Hannam and Fay Overly. The line of George Strouse Index # 15 was compiled by Jeanne Killick, please see #15 or a link created on my site.

1. NICHOLAS STROUSE B. ______ Died ca. 1809. Married 1st Anna Maria ______? She died after 1789. But prior to 1797.Married 2nd Christina _______? Bucks County Transcript tax 1784 Bedminster Twp, Strouse, Nicholas 96 acres, 1 house, 1 outhouse, 4 people 1790 Census Bucks Co. 1 male over 16 Years, 1 male under 16 Years 2 Females. The 1798 tax list shows that Nicholas has a log house 26' x 20' 1 story with a log barn 36' x 22', value $1,100.00 with 95 acres. His land adjoins Bartle White and Abraham Fretz which means his land was a portion of the 1001 acres in the far northeastern tip of Bedminster twp. The will of Nicholas Strouse was written December 8, 1808 #3630 shows his wife Christina is to receive 1/3 of the sum arising from the sale of Nicholas' estate. The children that are mentioned in the will are shown here in the order they appear in the will Michael, Christopher, John, George, Leonard, Henry, Jacob, a daughter intermarried with Michael Lambert and Margaret. Also mentioned in the will is Nicholas the son of John. Conrad Harpel and Peter Ott of Bedminster are directed as the Executers of the will. Note: will book 6 page 269 in Nockamixon Twp. December 19, 1789 Jacob Geist has a wife Eva Catherina and her brother Nicholas Strouse (could this be the same as our Nicholas?) I have to checked land deeds records until 1919 of the purchase or sale of this property. Jacob Wildonger purchased the real estate for $3066.80 of which ½ was to be paid April 1, 1809 and the second ½ was to be paid April 1, 1810. Estate to all his children and his wife's daughter Mary Catharine (It does appear Christina was previously married) There are a few new developments in this area, it appears Nicholas Strouse, was Johann Nicholas Strauss who was born ca. 1725 the son of John Michael Strauss of Urfar, from the County of Wertheim, Germany and that he and his wife and a child aged 1 and a half immigtrated. At that or nearly at that time his sister Eva Anna also immigrated. Further research is needed here.

There is a Nicholas Stroussin Ship Richard and Mary who came in Sep. 17, 1753. This is the most likely candidate to be of my family line.

The Following information was sent to me on 8/15/2000 by John Pierre M. Hannam, Sr.

The following is extracted from the handwritten notes for a speech given by Ed Lutton to the descendants of Tobias Melchior at a family reunion about 1972 or 1973 (copy provided by Carol Lembke McKee Jenkins). Transcription of text by John-Pierre M. Hannam, Sr., 21 May 1999:

"The Nicholas Strouss who is apparently our own young German from the Palatinate made his mark, instead of signing, when he arrived at Philadelphia, Sept 1753 on the ship "Richard and Mary".

He acquired 100 acres in Bedminster, according to tax records, had 7 sons and 2 daughters, according to his will. He died in 1809 leaving a wife Christina who might have been a 2nd wife. Perhaps we can find out someday.

Of these seven sons who complicate our search, only two - John and Henry, the next to youngest, b. ca 1755, remained permanently around Bedminster and Nockamixon, and, of these, John had no dau Sarah, while Henry did, bp 1788 as Maria Sarah. John left a will but Henry died intestate; an inventory exists which with other records show him to have been both a weaver and a farmer.

Among other items he left a Bay Mare, a Brindle Bull, a sleigh, a winnowing mill, several dung forks, 2 planks, a lot of shrukels (the spelling was informal in 1834), 25 bundles of flax, $16.00 worth of grain in the ground, 2 barrels of winneger, 5 spinning wheels, a lot of piler cases, and 27 yards of flax linen.

Brothers John and Henry Strouse both served in the Revolution. They married sisters, Catherine Elizabeth and Mary Magdalena, daughters of John and Anna Margaret Pfeil. We cannot now decide which was our John Pfeil among several early German immigrants of that name from the Palatinate. Our John Pfeil or his son John acquired property in Nockamixon and another son Henry was variously in Bedminster and Nockamixon. From baptismal records it is suggested that Anna Margaret Pfeil, wife of the 1st John Pfeil, was of the Overbeck family important to early Nockamixon.

So much for the line of Strausses behind Susannah Hoffmann."

THE STROUSE FAMILY SECOND GENERATION

The order of the children is a guestimate at this time and may be changed as new information is located. Since there are so many Strouse Families having children with similar given names research shall be slow.

11 ROSINA STROUSE Married Michael Lambert as depicted in her fathers will. ROSINA was born Bet. 1740 - 1760, Probably circa 1752, in Pennsylvania and died 1831 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. She married JOHN MICHAEL LAMBERT bef. 1775, son of JOHANN LAMPARTH and CHRISTINA UNKNOWN. He was born May 17, 1744 in Garrweiler, Filial of Groembach, Oberamt Freudenstadt, Wurttemberg Germany and died Bef. October 16, 1825 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John Michael Lambert, with his wife Rosina Strauss daughter of John Lenard Strauss and his wife (Philipina?)Christina settled in Tinicum Township., Bucks Co.,Pa. not later than 1776. They moved to Windsor Township., York Co., Pa. and returned to Tinicum, Bucks Co previous to April 28, 1782.

It is not known now whether their first son was born in Bucks Co. or in York Co., Pa. but Christian, the second son, and the daughter Barbara Ann were born in Windson(r?) York Co., Pa. the last named was there baptised, Frederich Lambert and his wife Barbara Ann being the sponsors. Who this Lambert family was is not known. He might have been an uncle to John Michael Lambert. At the present time 1893, there are no Lamberts In Windsor, York Co., a. but there are some in Lancaster Co., Pa., but through lack of interest on the part of some people I was unable to find any relatives from the other two brothers so far.

John Michael Lambert had 13 children, the nine younger ones were born in Tinicum, Bucks Co. Previous to 1804 he moved with his family to Nockamixon Township, Bucks Co.

The church record there shows that he and other members of his family communed there. John Michael Lambert was of small stature and had red hair, and so far as the writer knows nearly all of his descendents are of small stature but stout built. He died of consumption in the year 1826 was buried in the Nockamixon cemetery and was therefore 82 yrs. of age.

His wife Rosina survived him 5 yrs. She lived with their oldest son Nicholas Lambert in Williams Township, Northampton Co., Pa. near Raubsville. She died in the year 1831 and was buried in the Durham cemetery Bucks Co. Her age was not given.

Final settlement was made by the oldest son Nicholas Lambert on the 11th day of Dec., 1827. The amount was as follows-

"Dr. $619.671 ½ Cr. $360.611 ¼ Balance on hand 259.05 ½." So it was recorded in the office at Doylestown Bucks Co, Pa.

It would appear that the property was owned by Henry Pile, his father-in-law,  which was sold to John Strauss this was recorded January 12, 1826. An interesting footnote is that it appears that Henry Pile had a son John who's daughter Mary Magdalene Pfeil married Henry Strauss. Johns brother. In 1782 and 1783 John is in Bedminster. In 1796 and later he owns the property in Nockamixon.
