Note: This site is on private property and I did receive permission
to visit the site and to report on the condition. This private burial ground is located near the Gruversville Cemetery in Springfield Township. This site was visited and a sketch was made on 15 August 1981 by Ken Hottle. At that time Mr. Hottle made a sketch of the site and a small report on its condition. He also made a list of all tombstones which will follow. At that time Mr. Hottle shows the site to be approximately 20 feet square with a stone enclosure on all 4 sides. He also stated that the graveyard was in very good condition.
I was able to gain access on 21, July 2001 and would like to report my
findings. I found the wall (approximately 3 1/2' high with no access point) to
be in rather good shape. There are 12 sites apparently there is room for at
least an additional 8. There is one row on the westerly side with seven stones
and the second row has 6 stones. The area inside the wall is heavily overgrown
with poison ivy and saplings of 1/2" to 5/8" in diameter approximately
6'-8' high. I was invited back in the fall, and if time permits will return with
the present owner to help clear some of the underbrush. This is something I
would really look forward to. Several of these tombstones were difficult for me to look at closely since
the underbrush needs to be removed. I have directly copied Mr. Hottle'
inscriptions and hope to get a clearer view on my next visit. I did take a few pictures of the burial ground and will add the pictures to
this page in the very near future.
