Descendants of Henry Adam Ernst/Earnest

51A portion was added 4, Mar 2004

A recent E-mail by Dana Langworthy OLeary has added descendants of 51A her E-mail is located in that area for any questions please contact her directly. File is saved as D/Write/Hillpot/Ernst generation 3

(Although this work is not mine nor have I back up evidence of its authenticity, I will treat it as fact until any portion can be disproved)

The following information was sent to me 10/2000, by Nancy Fisher. I have taken the liberty to change the index #=s to adapt to my Hillpot family. I have also changed the structure by moving Mary from #56 to #52. There may be some typo=s when I shifted some of the children and will make all necessary changes in the near future.  Although the #=s have been changed all of the work has been that of Nancy. The Indian Eve portion although controversial, I believe is accurate. I do welcome all information on all of these family lines, as well as any supporting evidence.

I am aware there will be opposition to what is contained below and am looking at this with a very open mind. I am not a direct descendant of Indian Eve and have no desire to prove she is a Hillpot, however, I would like the records to reflect what is fact. I will make any changes, with the authors permission with any portion shown below with back up evidence.

There is a small piece of this in my Hillpot Family first generation on this web site with a time line. All changes and/or additions will be closely monitored for accuracy.

GENERATION #1

5   HENRY ADAM1 ERNST/EARNEST (note these #=s have been changed to adapt to the Hillpot family)  was born Bef. 1747 in Poss. Saxony, Germany, and died 1777 in Dutch Corner Area, Bedford, County, Pennsylvania.  He married EVE "INDIAN" HILLEBART(IN)/HELLAPARD Abt. 1761 in York County, Pennsylvania.  She was born 1734 in York County, Pennsylvania, and died 1815. The daughter of the immigrant George Adam Hillpot. Please refer to the Hillpot family for my family connection.

Notes for HENRY ADAM ERNST/EARNEST:

Henry was massacred by Indians at his home in the Autumn of 1777.

(Per Gene Earnest)

The names of the neighbors killed with Adam are unknown. Approximately 10 feet behind the marker on a bank are several grave markers that appear to be slate like rock, probably taken from a nearby field. These markers are obscured by weeds and brush and barely visible. A number of years ago I examined the grave stones but was unable to identify the names because of the poor condition.

Although the cabin is gone, it was in a field to the left of the marker about 75 feet away. Although this is now the front yard of a new home, I recently noticed a small pile of bricks at the location where the cabin stood.

Notes for EVE "INDIAN" HILLEBART(IN)/HELLAPARD:

Eve was captured by the same Indians that massacred her husband at her home in the Autumn of 1777. Along with Eve her 2 sons Henry and Michael were taken by the Indians. Different stories have been told as to the exact time Eve was held by the Indians, some sources say 7 yrs. and other sources say 9 yrs.

There also is some controversy as to whether Eve may have been a Hillibart(in) and not an Imler. Volume VII of the "Pennsylvania-German Society Proceedings and Addresses" includes a list of marriages performed by Rev. Muhlenberg. One of those marriages was performed in New Hanover, Pennsylvania on 28 Nov 1757.

This was the marriage of Adam Ernst, from Bedman Township and Eva Catharina Hillebart(in), daughter of Adam Hillebart. Both lived with John Potts, Esquire, in Douglass Township. This is believed to have been in Lancaster County.

Church records of the Williams Township Congregation in Lancaster County give the baptism of Johannes Heinrich Ernst, son of Adam and Eva Catharina, born 14 March 1772, baptized 26 April 1772. Adam and "Indian Eve" Ernst are known to have had a son named Henry and this birth date is very close to the date cited in published sources for his birth of 28 March 1772. This Congregation has no existing baptismal records from the 1760's, so baptisms of children during that time are lost.

Theory is that someone may have given Eve the Imler name by mistake instead of the correct female ancestor. Adam and Eve Ernst had been married for quite sometime when they came to Bedford County. It may be that none of her relatives accompanied them. It could also be that she did not have brother's and the family name died with her father. It also could be that her brothers went somewhere else from eastern Pennsylvania, like the Virginia back country. A name like Hillibart could have also been corrupted in a number of ways.

GENERATION #2

51 GEORGE ADAM EARNEST (HENRY ADAM1 ERNST/EARNEST) was born 03 Apr 1762, and died 28 Mar 1817.  He married ELIZABETH SAMUEL, daughter of CONRAD SAMUEL/SAMPEL.  She was born Apr 1764, and died Nov 1847.

Notes for GEORGE ADAM EARNEST:

George A. Earnest served as a Private in the Bedford County Militia, Pa. Line during the Revolutionary War.

There were two baptism's recorded for George and Sally Earnest on 2 Nov 1818. Witnesse listed were parents of the child. George Adam is to have died when his son George was 9 days old in 1917.  There are also three Elizabeth's listed in the family Bible. It is often though that at times when a child dies another is given the name. It may also be that Elizabeth may have been the middle name but if another child who had the name Elizabeth died the other may have been called it instead of their first name. there are also two Catharines's but Catherine was the first name of one child and the middle of the other.

Descendants of George have also had records whereas there had only been six children who lived to adulthood and the other children died young.

The metal flag holder says "War of 1812", but only because they ran out of Revolutionary War flag holders.  I have been trying for a couple of years to obtain a Revolutionary War one to put on his grave, but as of yet, the Veterans Office here in Bedford, PA hasn't received one.  Thanks, Lora Sellers

Notes for GEORGE W. COLEBAUGH:

CIVIL WAR INFORMATION:

George W. Colebaugh served with the 210th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. On several of his Muster Cards it also includes the 208th Regiment. It appears there were several errors with his description on his Muster and Descriptive Roll of Detachment for the 208th Regiment dated September 6, 1864. George's description information had been documented as 37 years of age, grey hair, brown eyes, dark complexion and 5 feet 6 inches in height. It also stated County credited, 15th Congressional District, Dover, York Co.

Do to these errors a second Muster and Descriptive Card was added with corrected information.

George W. Colebaugh mustered in at Camp Curtain, Pa. September 5, 1864 for the 208th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. His description is documented as 37 years of age, occupation Carpenter, blue eyes, light hair, light complexion and 5 feet 5 inches in height.

George W. Colebaugh had his share of bad luck concerning his equipment assigned to him. In December 1865 he did receive his first installment of bounty due him, but his bounty due for the months of January and February continuing through to May were completely different. George had  received a stoppage of pay for 2. George had to repay for a Shelter Tent, 1 Canteen and $6 per month of his pay for a period of 3 months.

On May 30, 1865 George mustered out of the 210th Regiment near Alexandria, Virginia. On George's Muster-out Roll it stated that he had been paid up to December 31, 1864. He had a clothing advance of $50 dollars with the total amount of bounty due and payable to George in the amount of $33 dollars.
