Broken Neck is Fatal to Quakertown Youth: Quakertown,
June 30-A broken neck, suffered while swimming in the Hinkle dam between
California and Shelly Wednesday night, resulted in the death of Harvey
Oswin Fluck, 23-year-old principal-elect of the Trumbauersville schools,
at the Quakertown Hospital late yesterday afternoon. His death took place
on the first anniversary of his marriage to Natalie Weikel. Mr. Fluck, in
company with Elwood Smith and Joseph O'Donnell, Jr., of this place,
journeyed to the dam Wednesday night to seek relief from the heat with a
swim. After swimming and diving for awhile, he took a dive into a shallow
spot and was found by his companions to be floundering about. Going to his
assistance they found him severely injured and dragged him ashore. Dr. R.
D. Tice, of this place was called and he advised the removal of the
injured youth to the Quakertown Hospital. At the hospital it was
discovered a spine injury existed and an emergency operation was performed
to correct a broken vertebrae of the neck. He regained consciousness
yesterday, but later sauk to his death. The youth, a son of Oswin R. and
Annie L. Horne Fluck, of Doylestown road, near Quakertown, was born in
Richland township he was a graduate of the Quakertown High School, class
of 1927, and received his Ph.D. degree with the class of 1931 at
Muhlenberg College...Besides his widow and his parents, he is survived by
two brothers, William H. Quakertown, and Willard H. at home, and six

Samuel Z. Haney Died: Tinicum, March 17-Less than a
week after his return from a six-weeks' trip to Florida, Samuel Z. Haney,
postmaster and owner of the general store at this place, died yesterday as
the result of an attack of acute indigestion. Mr. Haney, one of the
prominent business men in Tinicum township had made a trip to the Pacific
coast two years ago and last year attended the Century of Progress
Exhibition at Chicago, being in good health despite the fact he was over
70 years of age. Mr. Haney, a son of Isaac and Rachel Haney, and a
descendant of Michael Haney, the ancestor of the Tinicum branch of the
Haney family was born near Ottsville, July 24, 1863, In his early days he
was engaged with Theodore Moyer in the milling industry at Uhlertown. He
came to the village of Tinicum in 1908 when he purchased the business of
Theodore Slotter. He has been engaged in the general merchandise business
and served as postmaster ever since. In late years he was assisted by his
son, Leroy, who will continue at the same place. Mr. Haney is survived by
his widow, Lillie, nee Reep, and two children, Lercy [LeRoy] and Ruth, all
of whom reside at home. He was an active member of the Lower Tinicum
Reformed Congregation, having served as a member of the church consistory
for at least 15 years. |

10.-Amandus H. Melcher aged 77 years, died at his home here Sunday, April
9, after having been in poor health several years. The deceased was a
native of Nockamixon township, where he taught school for a period of six
years. He was married on August 9, 1877, to Emma L. Bean, also of
Nockamixon township. Mrs. Melcher died November 12, 1906. Shortly after
their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Melcher took up their residence in Plumstead
township, where the former had resided for 53 years. Mr. Melcher, who for
many years was a correspondent for "The Intelligencer," served
as secretary of the Union Dairymen's Association for 30 years. He also was
a member of the Plumstead Township School Board for nine years, serving as
its secretary for some time. The deceased was engaged in farming until
1908, when he built a home near the farm and where he since conducted a
general merchandise store. Survivors include four children, Mrs. Samuel L.
Shaddinger, Plumsteadville; M. Jacob Shelly, Fountainville; Elwood B.
Melcher, Pipersville, R. D., and Mrs. John Landis, Pipersville. There are
